5 Tips to Help Your Child Ease Back into a School Routine

The summer holidays always seem to fly by in a blur of late bedtimes, day trips, and relaxed mornings. As September approaches, many parents find themselves wondering how best to help their child get back into a school routine without too many battles along the way. A little preparation can make all the difference, so here are five gentle tips to make the transition smoother for everyone.

1. Bring bedtime back gradually

Over the holidays, bedtimes often slip later and later. Rather than making a sudden change the night before school starts, try easing back to a school friendly bedtime in small steps. Bringing bedtime forward by 15–20 minutes every few nights helps your child’s body clock adjust naturally, without too much resistance.

2. Re-introduce morning structure

Getting out of the door on time after weeks of slow mornings can be tough. In the week before school starts, try practising the morning routine — breakfast, getting dressed, brushing teeth, and packing bags — at roughly the same time each day. It helps children feel prepared and reminds them what’s expected once school mornings return.

3. Talk about what’s coming up

Sometimes children feel anxious about the return to school, especially if they’re moving into a new class or year group. Talking through what the first day might look like can ease those nerves. Ask what they’re excited about, and listen to any worries they may have. Knowing they can share their feelings with you helps build confidence.

4. Organise together

Involving your child in preparing their uniform, stationery, or packed lunches can make them feel part of the process. It turns “back to school” from something that’s happening to them into something they’re actively helping with. Laying out clothes and packing bags the night before can also reduce stress in the mornings.

5. Support better sleep with calming bedtime habits

A good night’s sleep is one of the most important ingredients for a smooth school routine. Calming activities before bed, such as reading together or listening to gentle music, help children wind down. Our No More Bad Dreams Pillow Spray and Uniform Dream Mist Pillow Spray are designed to ease night time worries and encourage deeper, more restful sleep. Both are made with gentle, natural ingredients to help your child drift off peacefully and wake up refreshed, ready for the school day ahead.

Getting back into the school rhythm doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little preparation, calm evenings, and the right support, your child can step into the new term feeling rested and ready. Here’s to smoother mornings and peaceful nights!
